Every fall, teachers see the same pattern play out. Students return to school, and concepts that felt familiar in May suddenly seem distant. Procedures slow down. Confidence drops a bit. And lessons that should feel like review start feeling brand new.
Parents often describe it as their child “forgetting everything over the summer,” especially in math. While that phrase isn’t entirely accurate, it does point to something very real: math skills are uniquely vulnerable to loss when they aren’t used consistently.
Unlike subjects that are more recognition-based, math is built on fluency. It depends on steady practice and layered understanding. When that practice stops for an extended period, the brain becomes less efficient at accessing those skills. Students don’t erase what they’ve learned, but the pathways to retrieve and apply it become weaker. That slowdown is often what parents and teachers notice first.
This effect is commonly referred to as the “summer slide,” and research has consistently shown that math is one of the most impacted subjects. Some students lose the equivalent of one to two months of progress over a single summer. For students who were already shaky with foundational skills, the impact can be even more pronounced.
Part of the reason math is so sensitive to this is because of how it is structured. Each concept tends to rely on several that came before it. Fractions connect to ratios, ratios connect to proportions, and those ideas eventually support algebra and beyond. When one piece becomes less stable, everything built on top of it becomes harder to access with confidence.
What makes this even more challenging is that these gaps don’t usually appear all at once. They tend to form gradually over time. A student might move through a unit during the school year understanding just enough to get by, but not enough to fully retain it. Homework and class pacing move forward, so the gaps never fully close. By the time summer arrives, there isn’t a strong foundation holding everything in place.
When students return in the fall, those small gaps show up as hesitation, slower processing, or a sense that they “used to know this but don’t anymore.” It’s rarely a true loss of learning, it’s more a loss of fluency and confidence that makes retrieval harder.
The encouraging part is that this pattern isn’t inevitable. Students don’t need to spend their summers grinding through hours of review to maintain progress. What matters more is consistency and reinforcement. Short, focused practice that keeps core skills active tends to be far more effective than occasional long review sessions that feel overwhelming and disconnected.
Equally important is addressing foundational gaps directly, rather than just redoing surface-level work. When students strengthen the underlying skills that everything else depends on, they regain speed and confidence much more quickly.
This is one of the reasons structured small-group learning environments can be so effective, especially during the summer months. With fewer distractions and more intentional pacing, students have the space to rebuild fluency instead of rushing through content. And, as mentioned before, it doesn’t have to be an all-day, every-day thing – kids can still enjoy their break!
